キー: Ab major
Verse 1
the front veranda where I rest I think of
early days when the miners used the tilly light to see their
way around they'd pick and shovel
black gold in the coal mines underground you may wonder
how the canary suite has anything to do
D
C
with the coal mines an d the miners,
before the tilly light was lit,
miners looked towards the birdcage
and the hero of the pit.
And the hero of the pit was
our little feathered friend.
And if that dreaded gas crept round,
his life would surely end.
He was put there for one reason.
It was sad, so it's been said,
but he saved the lives of
mining men by giving his instead.
Now the gas down in the tunnels, creeping underground,
could blow a pit to kingdom come, or flatten a mining town.
So watchful eyes were kept upon the bird while miners worked,
a tiny sweet canary bird, and someone ought to pay.
But it was back before the safety lamp was invented and then lit,
so the miners' lives
depended on the heroes of the pit.
And the hero of the pit was our little feathered friend,
and if that dreaded gas crept round,
his life would surely end.
He was put there for one reason, t 'was sad, so it's been said,
that he saved the lives
of mining men by giving his instead.
So I sit and watch the canary whistling in his cage from
G
when the miners used the tilly light to see their way around where
the little heroes of the pit saved their lives underground.
